New evidence financed by drug giant Eli Lilly, the makers of Cialis, have shown that a previously reported possible link between ocular damage and the use of PDE-5 erectile dysfunction medication does not appear to be valid

Eli Lilly's study which was carried out over six months and which involved almost 250 men showed that there were no adverse effects on sight due to taking Cialis.

The participants, some of who suffered from mild erectile dysfunction were daily given either a dose of Cialis a dose of Viagra or placebo medication.

The researchers said that out of the 194 men who finished the program and who were subjected to detailed eye examinations there were no clinically significant differences in vision between those volunteers who used the Viagra and Cialis and those who were given the placebo. The research was published in the Archives of Ophthalmology.

The original concerns were connected to rare reports of men saying that when they used erectile dysfunction medication they sometimes suffered from either blue-tinged or blurred vision. Other reports said that there was a connection between Viagra and higher rates of nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

Because Viagra, Cialis and Levitra work by inhibiting a particular enzyme in the bloodstream there were concerns that it also could be having an effect on similar processes in the retina of the eye.

Whatever the case, the fact is that the number of reports of vision problems are tiny when the huge scale of erectile dysfunction drug use is considered. Another thing pointed out by researchers is that since many of the men who use erectile dysfunction medication are elderly it is sometimes a normal process for them to suffer from poor eyesight.
