Generic ED Meds - Avanafil Cleared By FDA For ED

Avanafil is one of many Generic ED Meds cleared by FDA for erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction (ED), or impotence, can be a very distressing problem but can be treated with a number Generic ED Meds.

As described by MayoClinic.com ED is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex. Having problems getting an erection from time to time isn't necessarily a cause for concern.

However, if erectile dysfunction is an ongoing problem, it may cause stress, cause relationship problems and affect your self-confidence. Male sexual arousal is a very complex process which involves the brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles and blood vessels. Erectile dysfunction can be the result from a problem with any of these.

Robert Lowes has reported for Medscape Today "New Erectile Dysfunction Drug Okayed by FDA." Today the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Generic ED Meds Avanafil, Stendra and Vivus to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).

This is now the fifth FDA-approved branded oral drug for ED. The other Generic ED Meds drugs are tadalafil (Cialis, Eli Lily), vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn, Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals), and sildenafil (Viagra). As with the other drugs for ED, avanafil belongs to the drug class which is called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which increase blood flow to the penis.

The FDA said in an announcement today that as a PDE5 inhibitor, avanafil should not be prescribed for men who also take nitrates, which is commonly used to treat angina, because the drug combination can cause blood pressure to fall dramatically.

The FDA has also cautioned that PDE5 inhibitors may on rare occasions trigger color vision changes, a sudden loss of vision or hearing, and erections lasting more 4 hours. Avanafil is supposed to be taken on an as-needed basis 30 minutes prior to sexual activity. It is advised that clinicians prescribe the lowest dose that works for an individual patient.

The FDA has said that 3 clinical trials involving 1267 patients has established the safety and effectiveness of the Generic ED Meds. The participants were randomly assigned to take various doses of avanafil or a placebo for up to 12 weeks.

The patients who received avanafil reported significant gains in erectile function, vaginal penetration, and successful intercourse. The most common adverse events reported with this drug in more than 2% of patients in the clinical trial were found to be headache, flushing in the face and other areas, nasal congestion, symptoms of nasopharyngitis, and back pain.
