Viagra and Levitra

Though Levitra and Viagra may be two very different drugs, they are still both used to treat the same common issue of Erectile Dysfunction. Not only this, but there are some other similarities between them too.

Understanding ED

Erectile Dysfunction, or ED, is something that many people suffer from and there are a number of different treatments available on the market today. However, as with any medication, it is always best to get advice from your health care provider before concluding which drug will be best for treating your ED.  This is especially true as different drugs will come with different side effects, which depending on your own health can prove to be life threatening.

As embarrassing as it may seem, men with erectile dysfunction must understand that they are not alone. Millions of men all over the world suffer from ED each year and now, thanks to advancements in pharmaceutical technology, there are nearly as many choices of treatment for these sufferers.

The Differences Between Levitra and Viagra

The major difference between these two drugs is their main ingredient. While Levitra’s main ingredient consists of vardenfil, a PDE5 inhibitor, Viagra uses sildenafil citrate, which has been used, not only to treat cases of erectile dysfunction, but also pulmonary arterial hypertension.

The Side Effects of Levitra

There are many side effects that arise from the use of vardenfil. These are:

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Back Pain
  • Photosensitivity
  • Abnormal Vision
  • Eye Pain
  • Facial Edema, also known as Facial Swelling
  • Hypertension
  • Palpitations
  • Tachycardia
  • Arthralgia, also known as Joint Pain
  • Myalgia, also known as Muscle Pain
  • Rash
  • Itch
  • Priapism

In a few rare scenarios use of this drug has caused heart attacks. As well, vardenfil should not be taken if the patient is using any sort of nitrate medication as this has the tendency to produce very low blood pressure, which can be extremely dangerous.

Health care providers will never prescribe Levitra to a patient at risk of experiencing serious side effects, which is why you should always consult them before taking any ED medication.

The Side Effects of Viagra

The more serious of these side effects can include:

  • Priapism
  • Severe Hypotension
  • Myocardial Infraction
  • Ventricular Arrhythmias
  • Sudden Death
  • Stroke and Enhanced Intraocular Pressure

The more common and less serious side effects consist of:

  • Sneezing
  • Headache
  • Flushing
  • Dyspepsia
  • Prolonged Erections
  • Palpitation
  • Photophobia

Visual changes can include the blurring of vision, and in some reported cases sometimes a curious bluish tinge to vision.

Similarities Between Levitra and Viagra

However, despite these differences, Levitra and Viagra are nearly identical in that they are to be consumed anywhere from half an hour to a couple of hours prior to sexual activity.

Though Viagra may have been the starting point in the search for a treatment of Erectile Dysfunction, there is no doubt that Levitra is now being seen as a ‘new and better’ alternative. Levitra’s side effects are few compared to those of Viagra, though the response to the drugs does vary from person to person. A detailed analysis of your medical history is required when choosing the ideal prescription drug for you.
