A Headshop baron who imported fake Viagra has been ordered to do hard time behind bars
James Bellamy was yesterday handed a stiff three-year jail term and fined €100,000 for bringing in the dodgy Viagra.
A hearing last month heard how the 64- year-old had claimed his fake drugs were made from the ground-down winkies of Seals. But tests showed some of the 6,000 packets he shipped in from China contained a local anaesthetic often used by dentists. Others consisted of erectile dysfunction cures that are known to cause to seizures, comas and even death.
Cops found 17 large boxes of the fake Viagra when they searched Bellamy’s Nirvana headshop on Capel St, Dublin — and 848 sachets labelled Sextasy and Ivory Wave during a swoop on another premise.
Bellamy, of Killiney, Co Dublin, pleaded guilty to charges including importation of illegal medicines between 2008 and 2010. Judge Patricia Ryan fined his firm Harmony Products — currently in liquidation with €1.33million in assets — €150,000 for not having a licence to sell the products. She suspended the final year of Bellamy’s jail sentence and gave him and his company a year to pay the fines.
